Report from the Land - Weekend of June 19, 2009
The News - Latest News

Present:  Jim P., Peter, Glitter, Mac, Michel, Drew were on the land this weekend with Tom and Jade in and out.

Happy Summer Solstice!

For Saturday dinner Jade brought in a hearty and flavorful White Bean stew, which we ate with robust greens from the garden and a Chipotle Vinegrette that Peter offered, which was delicious.  Thanks to Jade we enjoyed a nice fire with some dry firewood he brought.

Windows in the kitchen were cleaned, the poured shower pan looks great and some of the tiles that have been cleaned and layed out behind the kitchen look like they'll be just beautiful in our shower.

Books were read, pooling water in the tarps over K5 was fixed, individual tent platforms were fixed, tarped and planned.  The compost pile grew a bit from the carrots we had stored in the root cellar.  I think Storing them in sand would slow the rot.  It was rainy and wet all weekend, so sand bins will have to wait until later.  And while grass could not be mowed, several mower-destroying stumps were uprooted from the Circle area and nature took care of watering the garden.

A guerilla tent-platfrom buildling session was planned, but not executed yet.  We delighted in the novel concept of running around putting up tent platforms up for EACH OTHER!  Wow.  (Hey - they're portable, so we figured if you perferred your own workpersonship, you could re-gift it and build your own anyway.)

(LISTEN UP:  If you wanted to build a 10x10 tent platform here's a plan:  (6) 2"x6"x10' pieces for the frame (14) 1"x12"x10' for the decking - lumber priced this weekend around $130ish at Biben's in Springfield!)  It's super-easy to build, but Jim seems to believe the price could be much lower if you bought the wood somewhere else.)

Roofing:  You can do 8 more 2x4x10 to create a roof-frame for a tarp, just be sure to slope it sharply to one side like a lean-to so the water doesn't pool.  For this you'd need a tarp larger than your platform and maybe 12ish plastic tent stakes.  This ads another $75 to the platform.  When you consider that a high-quality tent costs between $250 and $350, and that you can get away with a cheap-ass tent with this setup, it's a pretty cheap and quick way to stay comfortable at Destiny for the short to longer-term visitor - and you're helping to make Destiny more accessible overall.  Save your receipts so we can account for the in-kind donation (whether personally or anonymously).  That helps too.

We also workshopped for several hours (yes, several hours - maybe two or three?) on the intersection of individual needs as they shift through time with relation to one's attendance at Destiny, one's physical needs, one's depth of inter-relationship with the community and personal needs barriers to deepening one's attendance at Destiny.  The results were awareness and consensus-buildling - encouraging.

I was intrigued at the positive effect of naming a mysterious force at work even at Destiny.  We might have hoped to have left it behind in High School, only to discover that it really exists even among adults:  Popularity.  We acknowleded this reality as a real-world force to be understood and incorporated into the conversation, and definitely not to be ignored or swept under the carpet like some embarrassing family member we all wish would just go away.  Mutual understanding takes work, probably more than we realize.

We also had planned to workshop on specific methods for successful flirting at Destiny, but we postponed due to fatigue.

Drew did a disturbing fashion show with much-too-tight Whinny the Poo overalls and Mac brought back macaroni salad, chips and salsa from his solo lunch in town while those who remained ate popcorn sprinkled with Chipolte tobasco sauce.  Yum.

Looks like Peter, Jim P., and Michel will each be heading to NY for Pride.

Heads up to folks who might be visiting the land next weekend: The hearth will likely need your warmth by the time you get here.  You'll have Chipotle tobasco sauce to help you out.

xo
Michel

PS.  Omissions are my terrible terrible fault.  :)

Thursday, 09 October 2008
Thanks to everyone who participated in the cabin brainstorm Sunday morning at Governance. Here are the notes, presented in the order they were taken. We tried to frame our comments in terms of 'needs'.
  • accessibility
  • dry
  • warm
  • 3-4 seasons, leaning towards 4 seasons
  • bug-free and mold-free place for drag
  • mosquito free
  • balance of privacy and bunk house style
  • bunks built for bigger people
  • convertible - bunks fold up if not in use, more inside
  • space for bad weather
  • full-size bunks for puppy piles
  • auditory privacy
  • available late-night bed space (for late arrivals)
  • loft over workshop?
  • delightful
  • cute
  • completeable (sooner rather than later)
  • responsive to land
  • good fung shui
  • well-sited (not in already developed space, between the road and septic mound visioned as parkland with cabins around, connected by boardwalks, circulate in bad weather, public community space rather than
  • private, design tells function)
  • residencey and event sleeping
  • 1 cabin with multiple needs-steward, accessible, and event space
  • porch sleeping for summer
  • place for land steward and/or gathering steward
  • finish the kitchen first
  • remember to schedule so that we can have foresters cut and mill our trees for construction
  • magical private space
  • private space for residency
  • floating pods of delight
  • peaceful,charming, woodsy
  • warm and dry
  • fostering peace, tranquility and noncompetitiveness
  • etherial music eminating
  • elvish village like in Tolkien
  • multifunction, beautiful and whimsy
  • dog space
  • they'll come who don't already
  • buildings that support our vision
  • lessen dependence on oil
  • office space for Destiny - keepable, more than a shelf in the kitchen
  • library
  • instrument storage
A separate brainstorm of Mac, Bambi and Trixie about the needs of office space for Destiny created these notes:
  • laptop
  • phone -could be satellite, cell or landline
  • brochures, maps, welcome kits storage
  • copier?
  • lockable (at least a closet or file cabinet)
  • bulletin board
  • post office/mail boxes
  • Safe? for money/credit card
  • archives (currently stored at Bambi's house- do we want to move to Destiny?) would need approx 20  banker boxes or 2 5-drawer file cabinets
