Report from the Land 9/20/10: PDF Print E-mail

Good Morning Faeries,

Daisy Shaver here. I'm trying to wake up on a Monday morning. I'm at home and there aren't enough birds singing, like in Sanctuary, to rouse me. I wanted to give you a quick report from the Land.

There were 13 of us on the Land at various times this weekend. This season has been one of the driest since the 1960s in Vermont. Brooks and streams are flowing really low. The trees seem a little wilted. But the color is starting in and it's incredible to see the hillsides across the way start to radiate new color. It changes each day. There hasn't been a freeze yet.

THIS Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday: the 24th, 25th, 26th and 27th I'll be on the Land to work the final lime coat on the exterior kitchen walls, if we find lime. (See below.) It's beautiful on the Land this time of year. I can use help with lime application. You can be taught. I can also use help with a kitchen kween. If you think you'll come up, register on the website and explain when you'll be coming. You can e-mail me for questions. But registration helps so we all can see who will be there to plan. There is also lots of firewood to be stacked and cleaning in the meadow. There are nursery plantings from the Huffers to plant that are nuts and berry bushes. There are other garden chores and gathering prep chores I can put you to work on. Anyone is free to come to the Sanctuary this weekend. I encourage folks to come for these small work weekends which tend to be intimate and sweet. You don't have to attend to hard labor but I ask you involve yourself in the process of chores and all for gatherette/work weekend. AuTom greeted the fae with fresh-baked bed and pasta Friday evening. It's a sweet feeling to arrive and be enveloped by the Sanctuary and dozen or so fae!

The garden is thriving and putting out its last produce. The deer should arrive anytime the next few weeks to mow it all down. Hiaka has been the consistent gardener this summer. This weekend he worked at closing beds for the season. Last week he moved the final wildlife plantings. He will be babysitting his grandkids on Tuesday and Thursday and not around.

Don Huffer, our neighbor and forestry consultant, drove me to Walpole to pick up the concrete mixer. The bad news is three places that told me they had the lime we needed did not. So Peat and I were on the scramble to find some. By afternoon Saturday it was too late to get to another concrete place which seems the only place they carry mason's lime these days. So, I'll be picking up the lime this Friday with the goal to start the mudding on Saturday. AuTom and Squib did surface prep work and taped the windows and beams. I need a car or truck with a trailer ball hitch to return the mixer on Monday.

Wave and Sammy worked on framing the boxes that will be the clerstory above the porch. They'll continue this framing and head to WRJ to cut the lexan stored at the Tip Top (thank you Matt). They will be off-land on Tuesday and Wednesday. Wave will be going to the Naraya in NH on Thursday and be away until Monday. They are planning to get the clerstory completed by 10/10/10 Gathering. A hornets nest has put a bit of a wrench in their way.

Another glitch to the weekend is the generator. The pull rope mechanism is acting up and being difficult to start. It's off to repair to fix the rope and the loose oil level attachment. Hopefully the generator will be fixed for them when they return. But this may need to be picked up for next weekend. We may also have to consider getting a rental if it's not ready. So I'm seeking someone who might be able to pick this up if they cannot get it.

Peat and I bought a new chainsaw together. He and Hemlock cut lots of firewood for the yurt and the Crone Circle. They worked at sawing the logs on the road up from the old kitchen. Peat and I then cut lots of wood for the Hectate Circle. Nomi and Squib helped with that.

Daddy Jay, Nomi, AuTom, Squib, and I focused some Path of Destruction energy in the fresh cut meadow. We worked on a section by cutting and stacking firewood and stacking brush piles. A sapling insurgency was had on new saplings in the that meadow by Daddy Jay and Squib.

NEXT WEEKEND:
Please register if you can come
Seek help with transport of the towed mixer and possibly picking up the generator. Cars or trucks for pick up lime if I can't fit it in my rental car
            Looking for mudding help
            Gardening and landscaping tasks
      Wildlife plantings
