Land Use Report: Prepare for the Annual Meeting 2012

By Daisy Shaver

Prior to the More Than Annual Meeting 2011, the Land Use Plan-It outlined its work plan for projects for the 2012 gathering season. The plan is based on the current Land Use Plan-It faeries and the work they feel they can complete this season. These are the new or on-going development projects. Not included are many of the routine set-up and maintenance work that occurs each year. On-going maintenance includes road repair, brush management, fallen trees, forestry and erosion projects, grounds-keeping and building management.

Finish kitchen The stainless steel tops for the center island and dish area of the kitchen have been completed. These need to be installed. The pass through will have a handwashing sink within it. Above this will be deep wire shelving for dish storage. The cabinets supporting the countertops will house storage bins that need be ordered and organized. Refrigeration methods are being explored and will depend on the direction of solar and energy development plans. The windows around the shower need completion as well as some internal window and fixture work. The clerstory will have an automatic opening system for ventilation. When a solar system is decided upon, the lighting and stereo systems can be installed.

Over the summer, Endora and Mr. Lanier have been facilitating the building of "a three-season, rustic cabin" at Destiny. Faeries with little to no skills in framing have been coming together to build our first permanent sleeping spaces. The two work weekends faeries broke into three or four teams led by a faerie who knew how to do it.

Below Ophelia, Daisy Shaver, and MxC work on the roof.

Grange Gatherette Redux

What a sweet Grange Gather(ette) we had on the land this past week.  By the stewardship of our very own, Trixie, we honored the centuries old tradition of the Grange by jamming, canning and dying yarns for knitting.

Many arrived Thursday and assembled the necessary "wild" elements thereby introducing us to a new term, "wildcrafting".  Blackberries and goldrod (in its sneezy, yellow glory) were rendered into fabulous, earth-friendly dyes for wool yarn which was soaked and dried in the Destiny water and sun.  The colors were really lovely and very earthy in tone.  The goldenrod made a lovely chartreuse and the blackberry turned into a very greyish bluish purple.  I cannot wait to see them in a hat or a throw someday.

Friday saw the arrival of many more Faes to a total of around 40.  Wow!  Who knew that there'd be such a hunger?  AuTom went straight to work on freshly picked blueberry jam, which if the test bottle was any indication was awesome.  Neth was even a convert having previously avoided blueberries.

A lovely and spicy Thai curry was made for dinner and most people retired early for the drier and more action packed Saturday.  Saturday was glorious weather.  Blue and crisp with little fluffy clouds ("yeah...you might still see them").  Greg and Carey worked on the Spider for shingling and more dye was made.  Cherry jam was made that day and quickly the spoils were eaten up.  Several bottles were put aside for Fall Foliage (save them, please!).  A quick run to Don and Neenas for eggs and produce brought us to late afternoon and the Faeries descended upon Brockway Mills for a great rapids ride.  The water was high and running fast and alas, Nomi lost his glasses.  We spied Muggles in the distance and the wee ones were spotted peeping from behind the bolders to catch a glimpse of Faes in their natural habitat.  It was funny.

Saturday night was filled with stars and great food thanks to Holla.  We had a bit of a music jam near the cauldren and played all the old favorites....House on the Hill, Transgender Express.

Sunday morning pancakes by Neth were a hit with blackberries from the land.  Pickling was also happening and several jars of garlic dills appeared out of the water bath.  Yummm.  By lunch time, many were departing for the default world just as the SexMajic workshop was getting going.  It was a lovely time I hope to be a part of again.
